Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room Organizational Movie Paper Enron Corporation’s failure in the year of 2001 has become a depiction of unethical corporate behavior for years to come. After having watched Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room; I found many organizational communications course concepts could be brought to our attention within the documentary. To further our understanding, I will offer my insight as to how class-related concepts connect with the documentary by discussing how Enron developed strong organizational values by identifying certain heroes and their stories that developed their sense of strong risk taking as well as discussing Enron’s â€Å"rank and yank† system that can be asserted with F.W. Values are the beliefs and visions that members hold for an organization. 2. Heroes are the individuals who come to exemplify an organization’s values. These heroes become known through the stories and myths of an organization. This theory can be described as a way in which organizational members collectively interpret the organizational world around them in order to define the importance of the organizational happenings. Upon watching the documentary, one could conclude that Enron’s bosses created a culture of pushing limits and taking risks. From the movie, we understand that Jeff Skilling was known to be a nerd as well as others within Enron. It seemed as though Jeff had woken up one day and decided to change himself by wearing contacts instead of glasses, changing is wardrobe, and doing some modeling. As he changed, so did others who worked under him for the fact that they saw Skilling as their hero. With time, it has been noted that Jeff became some sort of tragic figure. He became a man who was radically different than how he portrays himself. It was known that Skilling was a huge risk taker and he often talked about, and then started to manifest in trips that he began to lead with small group s and customers that were often times dangerous. With the rise of the morning sun, most of us awake to a day of possibilities, but for those in extreme poverty daybreak brings only anxiety and despair as they try to survive on little to nothing. Over one billion people are currently living in extreme poverty, unable to fathom a future free from hunger, disease and oppression. Extreme poverty, defined as living on $1.25 a day or less, traps generations into an arduous existence with few opportunities to escape. Helping to eliminate extreme poverty means first understanding that it is possible to provide people with a pathway out and if it is possible, we therefore have the responsibility to do so. Millions die each year as a result of extreme poverty. Goals must clearly be established to reward governments wh o work to uphold human rights and denied to those who do not. As rates of health and education increase, so too do the rates of financial assistance or debt forgiveness. If human rights records are not improved, further funding is denied to those ill performing governments and redirected to community-based programs aimed at improving the well being of its members. Community groups play an invaluable role in alleviating poverty within a region. Creating an alliance with the community allows them to express their ideas, concerns and opinions. It protects against the unforeseen challenges and misused resources that can result if local customs or markets are overlooked as the development plan is formulated. The establishment of these community groups helps to identify and preserve cultural memes and additionally supplies the members with a sense of confidence as they are respected for the contributions they have to offer. He also said that he wanted to rid the city of all the people that were causing all the pollution in the city. He planed to do this by killing them all. Then the prophet, Teiresais came to him and told him that he couldn't do this. He said the reason that he couldn't do this was that he was the problem. But Oedipus did not believe him. He then killed an innocent shepherd for no apparent reason. He also slept with his mother and killed his father in the play. The prophet had said this would happen so he did it. I think he figured it was his fate so he just did it. Then to top it all of he decided to punish him self by gouging out his eyes. I really see no point in what he did in any part of the play. I really don't think that he had the right to try and change the city by killing anyone who he thought was corrupting or polluting the city. It shows that he was very stubborn in his ways. He didn't even stop to think of what he was doing. He was killing innocent people an obvious crime against the state and religion. And with his own views on this he should have realized that he is going against all that he stands for. He is trying to get rid of people that are just like him. Now on to him killing his father and sleeping with his mother. This is wrong no matter how you look at it. This is again a crime against religion. Even if the prophet said that this was to happen he doesn't have to go out of his way to do it. He should have just been patient and let his fate happen. Now his gouging out his eyes to punish himself is a ridiculous thing to do. He should have thought about what a burden this would be on others around him. For example how this would effect his daughter. He should have asked himself how her life would be if she had to guide him around all the time. Maybe then he wouldn't have done such a stupid thing. In my personal opinion on Oedipus, I think he was a pathetic man. He sdidn't care how his actions would effect others. He also didn't take the time to see if he was doing things that were actually going against his own beliefs. Oedipus was also very stubborn in that he wouldn't listen to what the prophet had to tell him. If he wasn't so narrow minded maybe he would have lived a happier life and not brought so much sorrow to the people around him.

Cross Cultural Management A study on Cadbury and Kraft Merger In the current era of globalization with the advancement in the technology, communication and the channels to access the external business world; the process of business has changed drastically. Corporate personnel and industry professionals are making effective decisions and are developing efficient strategies to sustain their competitive advantage in the market. Many new management disciplines like IT management, corporate governance, mergers acquisition, business continuity management and such new principles are becoming prominent. There are various reasons that are pointed out by the corporate firms which are behind these management concerns. They include cost cutting measures through economies of scale, global expansion, risk reduction, effective and efficient management practices and so on. Merger Acquisition is one of the effective ways to invest to gain market share and to expand the business. They help in global expansion, cutting costs, new knowledge and expertise acquisition, identification of niche areas across the global market, extension of customer base, accessing new technologies and many. Dealing with the integration of two similar or different companies, it also involves certain difficulties and issues to handle. Although companies are pursuing MA aggressively, it is found that 60-80% of them are financial failures regarding their performance in the stock markets or obtaining high profits (Salame, 2006). Through this study, I tried to understand the various management issues and concerns involved in the merger acquisition process with the help of Cadbury and Kraft merger. Kraft-Cadbury Merger: The Kraft takeover of Cadbury did not happen in a simple routine manner. It involved various management issues which had proved this event likely to shape future public policy towards acquisitions and corporate governance. The initial steps towards this strategic decision of acquiring Cadbury started in the year 2007 on 3rd October when Cadburys Somerdale factory plans that announced its to shut down the factory with a loss of 500 jobs and to invest the production in the Bourneville Plant of Birmingham to the new plant in Poland. In the year 2009 on September 7th, Irene Rosenfeld, Chairman and CEO of Kraft stated that Kraft would be in a position to continue the Somerdale factorys operations without closing the plant and thus preserving United Kingdoms manufacturing jobs. But this statement given by the Kraft was not taken as granted by the Cadbury workforce before the takeover. The National Officer of the Unite the Union, which is a representative body of Cadbury workforce, Jennie Formby compared Kraft statement with the line there is no meat on the bones at all saying that there is no real intention of Kraft to come and save the jobs. Finally in the year 2010 on 19th of January, Cadbury announced the bid offer made by Kraft to its shareholders and the takeover is finally concluded on 2nd of February, 2010. But to the shock of the public and the stakeholders, Kraft, after a week of its confirmation of the takeover, announced that it would not be capable enough to maintain the Somerdale factory open and would like to approve the decision made by the Cadburys senior management to discontinue its operation. This decision made by Kraft immediately after the takeover led towards criticism. Marc Firestone, Executive President of Kraft Industries Inc. and Irene Rosenfield, CEO asserted their decision saying that before making a public statement Kraft was not aware of various factors like the internal structure of building, products of Cadbury in that facility, status of machinery and others (Mergers, acquisitions and takeovers, 2010 ) In this dramatic way, the whole process of acquisition of Cadbury by Kraft has been done making it an event that can shape the future endeavors of public towards takeovers, acquisitions and corporate governance. Inside Story of Cadbury and Kraft before Takeover Cadbury has faced many ups and downs throughout its journey especially under the visionary leadership of Todd Stitzer. Todd Stitzer working successfully for 20 years for Cadbury Schweppes has played a key role as a master mind behind the acquisitions of soft drinks industries made by Cadbury in US. He was later appointed as the chief strategy officer by John Sunderland to the confectionary side to achieve the similar success. The then competitors in the chocolates and sweets industry were the international companies Nestle, Mars, Kraft, Wrigley, Ferrero and Hershey. Stitzer said that acquisitions alone would not solve the problems of Cadbury. He said that the revenue growth model has to be revitalized to gain in the financial performance. Stitzer had developed many strategies, took some visionary steps and led Cadbury gain the business world with his strategic thinking. Stitzer and his management team aimed at the global domination in the Confectionary world, while the stakeholders w ere much worried about the financial performance. Overall with all his visionary leadership abilities and strategic decision making capabilities, Cadbury Schweppes split into pure confectionary leader Cadbury. Nelson Peltz, founder of the hedge fund Trian Fund Management also had his own role in the business of Cadbury. Irene Rosenfield, CEO, Kraft Food Industries Inc. had a keen interest in the confectionary business and proposed an offer to buy Cadbury to Carr, Chairman of Cadbury after Sunderland. Carr without consulting the stakeholders had refused the offer but Peltz who still owned the shares in the Cadbury with discussion and negotiation with Kraft finally made Cadbury lose its independence in January 2010. Impact of the Merger Cadbury-Kraft merger which involved a high dramatic and strategic process as discussed above has got its own pros and cons. Before analyzing the performance after a year later the takeover, there are certain agreements on which the takeover is being implemented. These include aspects like the brand name of Cadbury would be continued; previous commitments, pension arrangements would be honored and such, for at least two years. Regarding the business performance, the combined business has achieved profitable results despite of the difficult economic climate outside. It had improved the sales by 13% compared to 2009 and also has sold 300 million bars more comparatively. They improved and modified the corporate structure so as to combine the Cadburys successful chocolate history with the Krafts brand heritage. The combined systematic approach would create value and would help in economic and internal growth (Kraft Foods completes Cadbury takeover, 2010 ). There is high capital investment, support and commitment seen in the Cadburys RD sites so as to improve the combined business performance and the products. As we know, every coin has two sides; every decision would have pros and cons. As discussed above, the withdrawal made by Irene Rosenfield regarding the Somerdale factory led to the criticism from the workforce. Similar reaction is seen even after the takeover with many employees departing from the Cadbury. Kraft is trying to improve the relationship with local authorities so as to increase the employment opportunities. Due to the change in the working culture, a feeling of fear is seen among the employees to express their views and opinions. Kraft says Cadbury being a firm of values and heritage; we try to combine our efforts in bringing job satisfaction to employees and to outperform the market as well. (Update on progress made since Kraft Foods acquired Cadbury, 2011) To conclude, Kraft taking over Cadbury is not just acquiring an excellent company but establishing a strong connection with the public; so it has to work hard to prove and show the combined benefits of Cadbury and Kraft Foods.

The established weather idiom is â€Å"a chance of,† as in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Wondering if it was just the local man’s quirk, I did a Google search and found the unidiomatic use of â€Å"chance for† on weather sites in other parts of the country: Sun with a Chance for Showers (WFMZ-TV Eastern Pennsylvania and western New Jersey) Mostly Cloudy with a Chance for Scattered Showers (WBNS Columbus OH) Cooler with a Chance for Showers (KRCR Redding/Chico CA) A Google search indicates that the use of â€Å"chance for† is much less common when the anticipated weather is snow or plain rain. It’s difficult to discuss preposition use because so often the â€Å"correct† usage is idiomatic. Although the â€Å"chance for† weather usage is most frequent on the airwaves, I did a search on the print-based Ngram Viewer to get a sense of general usage. The combination â€Å"chance for showers† is not found at all. â€Å"Chance for rain† does produce a result, very close to nil; the usage rises slightly in the late 1980s. An Ngram search for â€Å"chance of† and â€Å"chance for† shows a distinct preference for of as the preposition to follow chance and chances. The bottom line is that of is the most usual preposition used with the noun chance in most contexts. Here are some examples: LeBron asks: What are the chances of making 10 free throws in a row? Plato’s Apology Socrates was a very simple man who did not have many material possessions and spoke in a plain, conversational manner. Acknowledging his own ignorance, he engaged in conversations with people claiming to be experts, usually in ethical matters. By asking simple questions, Socrates gradually revealed that these people were in fact very confused and did not actually know anything about the matters about which they claimed to be an expert. Socrates felt that the quest for wisdom and the instruction of others through dialogue and inquiry were the highest aims in life. He felt that "The unexamined life is not worth living." Plato's Apology is the speech Socrates made at his trial. Socrates was charged with not recognizing the gods recognized by the state and corrupting the youth of Athens. In The Apology, Socrates attempted to defend himself. He spoke in a very simple, uncomplicated manner. He explained that he had no experience with the law and courts and that he would just use honesty and directness. He also explained that he behaved in the way that he did because of a prophecy by the oracle at Delphi, which claimed that he was the wisest of all men. Recognizing that he was ignorant in most things, Socrates concluded that he must be wiser than other men only in that he knew that he knew nothing.
